NCIS gets it wrong on guns

I normally like NCIS on CBS, but this week was extremely disappointing. This week's show entitled "Tribes" starts off with the absurd claim that "Nearly 30 percent of all gun related deaths are the result of the owners' own weapon."

John,

This comment may not be absurd at all when you take into consideration the fact that more than 50% of all firearms deaths are suicides.

Thanks, Anonymous, but I don't think that fixes the problem. Say about 58 percent of gun deaths are suicides. You could get almost 30 percent if no mor than half of gun suicides where committed with one's own gun. I would have to look up the numbers, but this seems too low. (Possibly they were counting it as someone's gun if it were owned by someone else in the household.) In any case, this was clearly a murder scene. I don' t know what would be the reason of raising this number including suicides at that point in time.

Either way, this claim is totally insidious in that it is no doubt designed to convince people that keeping a gun in the house inexorably leads to fatal accidents and having the weapon turned against you by a criminal, both of which are in fact uncommon events.
