"Obama on small-town PA: Clinging religion, guns, xenophobia"

Ben Smith at the Politico has this from a talk that Obama gave at a fundraiser this past Sunday in San Francisco (emphasis in Ben Smith's piece):

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. . . .

This is the same guy who is trying to convince Pennsylvanians that he is pro-gun?

Thanks to Bruce Moon for the link.

He must have slipped there and been honest. From his prospective guns and religion are both simply neurotic responses to stress. I'm not sure how xenophobia and discredited 16th Century economic policies snuck in there; perhaps is because the particular flavors of xenophobia and silly economic policies mentioned differ from the ones he supports.

Obama seems to have gone from merely outlandish to positively extraterrestrial. He expects us to believe that Pennsylvanians look to the Second Amendment to explain the changing job market? Mind boggling. I've been anticipating that "the brother from another planet" will have Marvin the Martian as his running mate, at least in spirit. It would, of course, be the first all African-Martian-American, totally extraterrestrial ticket!

Indeed. A mistake in politicianese is when one slips and actually says what they really think.

Still, I know that when we unenlightened, barely sentient Americans in flyover country lose a job or see a downturn in the economy, we immediately think the following (in no particular order): (1). It's the fault of those not like me; (2) Illegal immigrants are responsible for my misfortune and only allowing anyone and everyone to violate immigration laws can possibly restore my economic well-being; (3) I must immediately fondle every gun I can put my hands on to restore my fragile masculinity; (4) If I didn't believe in God, I surely must now.

Of course, the Obamessiah would also have us believe that only an enlightened, super-being such as himself can show us the way, for only he and his ilk know what's good for us, and without him leading his foolish, gun loving, God worshipping, minority hating, illegal immigrant despising flock, why, we might make choices on our own, and they would, of course--since we're not living in San Francisco--be the wrong choices.

Thanks goodness for the Obamessiah. Where would we be without him?
