The difference between a machine gun and a semi-automatic

One warning: this piece presents a somewhat confused discussion of the 1986 federal law dealing with machine guns.  The law banned increasing the number of machine guns in circulation.

The gentleman in the video is incorrect about the M-16 being an assault rifle. Because it utilizes the 5.56 NATO cartridge, it is an select fire carbine.

The first Assault Rifle was the German Sturmgewehr (storm rifle), and it used the 8mm Kurtz (Short) cartridge which was a downsized version of the round that was used in the K98 Mauser bolt action rifle.

I will give the gentleman in the video kudos for safing the weapon (you can hear and see him engage the selector to safe). He did however sweep the cameraman with the muzzle once, and then did not do it again.

After reading my previous post, it occured to I that perhaps I may be barking up the wrong tree here, so to speak.

Everything that comes from the media and politicians about firearms ranges from malarky to outright lies.

This video is a fine example of the following statement from Josef Goebbels;

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

The video posted here, is an example of how the assault weapon lies have been absorbed by the American people. If an individual, such as the gentleman in the video can say that an M16 is an assault rifle, there is definitely a paradigm shift in the understanding of what constitutes such a weapon, and that's exactly what some in government want, and seem to have achieved.
